Smokers with thyroid eye disease are more likely to undergo surgery for their condition compared with their counterparts who do not smoke, a study has found. The study used data from the US Intelligent Research in Sight Registry and included all adults with Graves’ disease. Researchers assessed the effect of smoking on the likelihood of a surgical intervention for thyroid eye disease, including orbital decompression, strabismus surgery, and eyelid recession surgery. Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. and Deputy Chief Bryan Warner are proposing new legislation that would commit over $100 million for addiction treatment facilities, new treatment programs, a scholarship endowment, and other initiatives using settlement funds from the tribe’s opioid and e-cigarette settlements. The program incorporates motivation, behavior modification, strategies for coping with cravings, peer support, and medication safety education into each session.
